Sleep is important for concentration, memory formation and the repair of damage to your body’s cells during the day. Chronic lack of sleep increases the risk for developing obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and infections.
Lack of Sleep Can Kill
Researchers do not know exactly why people need sleep, but we do know that lack of sleep can kill. In research studies, rats normally live two to three years, but if rats are totally deprived of sleep, they only live about five weeks. They also develop sores, their immune systems do not work well and their body temperature drops. Humans deprived of sleep for long periods begin hallucinating and develop other mental problems.
Sleep and Concentration
When people do not have enough sleep, they cannot concentrate well the next day and have problems forming memories. Researchers believe that during sleep, neurons can shut down and repair any damage done during the day. Without these repairs, the neurons may not function correctly due to a buildup of waste products. Sleep also seems important for the formation of memories.
Growth and Beauty Sleep
Important hormone production is regulated during sleep; in children, human growth hormone (HGH) is released during deep sleep. Insufficient sleep can affect hormonal balance in adults as well. Tissue repair also occurs during sleep, including repair to the daily skin damage done by UV light. Getting enough deep sleep will help your skin repair itself.

THE SECERET OF LOOKING MUCH YOUNGER THAN YOUR AGE
No need for heavy smokey eyes (not a great look for aging eyes anyway) or deep, matte lips (same goes for aging lips). This year it's about choosing one feature to play up (pretty much a standard rule). As older women, we're in luck! The lips can be played up with bright colors and gloss or the eyes can be simply lined with a charcoal or plum liner, a bit of grey or hunter green shadow and lots of mascara.
Lips are being shown in bright tangerine and red. While tangerine may be tough to pull off, good choices for us would be a coral-peach or glossy red. There are numerous reds so choose the best for you (warm bricky reds for warm tones and cool blue reds for cool tones). Be sure to stay bright, but no too bright-that's best left to 20 year olds. Wear a light clear gloss (no glittery goop!) over the color for the most current look.
For the most current look, take a good hard look at your brows. Right now thicker, fuller brows are current. Nothing screams "OLD LADY" like thin, penciled in brows. If yours are thin, grab some good brow growth and use it daily.
Pluck sparingly and let them grow in. If you have never lightened your brows (or darkened them), this is the time. Brunettes can usually go a shade or maybe two lighter and blondes/redheads a bit darker.
To lighten brows, just get some facial bleach and apply it for a few minutes. Watch it carefully! Be sure to only go a shade lighter at first (about 3-5 minutes). You can always color them in a bit if you go too light, but try to avoid it. Going a bit lighter can really help brighten up your eye area and face and make you eyes stand out. Take a look at celebs of a certain age on TV. They are nearly all lightened a bit. The exception might be very dark-haired beauties like Jennifer Connolly. Either way, shaped brows are always in and this season they are just a bit fuller.
To get the soft and full look, use a brow growth product, powder or soft pencil and a little brow wax. A great way to get a good brow shape is to literally take a dark brow pencil and draw on your ideal brow (around your current brow). Fill in with powder and wipe away the pencil. Don't get too outrageously large--just go a bit beyond your natural line if it's thin

THE SECRET OF STAYING HEALTHY
Some people tend to age faster than others, here are some tips my wife and I learned which we personally applied. Whenever my wife and I meet other people, they always thought we’re five or even ten years younger than our age. The following tips are mainly behavioral approaches, so there’s no need to apply those costly additions to your face or body.
1. Get Good Sleep
Sleep normalizes our bodies functioning.
2. Keep Your Stomach Trim
Exercise but don’t overdo it. Brisk walking and running (if you are younger, i.e., in your 20’s or early 30’s) will benefit a lot to your appearance. Our pores get clogged if we do not allow it to excrete dirt from our bodies through perspiration. One way to judge if you’re doing fine is your breathing. If you can breath deeply and your stomach does not bulge, then you are alright. Body frames differ so you cannot really expect to look like the slim ones if you have a larger body frame.
3.Have a Positive Outlook
Many people live longer because they have a positive attitude towards life. If you have problems, these are at best transient. Most of your cares can be resolved through time as time heals wounds. Prayer and meditation are one of the best remedies. I applied a biblical approach to my problems and they were gone. Cast your burdens upon the Lord, and He will give you rest (Matthew 11:28-30)
4. Eat a Nutritious Diet
Nutritious diet means less of junk or fatty foods. Eat as much fruit as you can but avoid too much acidic fruit like pineapple as it can damage the protective coating of your teeth. Fruits contain lots of antioxidants.
5. Drink Lots of Water
You hear it all the time. The standard water intake is 8 glasses a day, not the cold one because this could upset your stomach. Also, you should not drink too much right after a meal.
6. Avoid exposing yourself to too much sunshine.
Especially on hot summer days, the heat of the sun can ruin your skin. Although sunscreens are usually recommended, it’s better to be on the safe side. There may be undesirable ingredients in it. Find a shade.
7. Stop Smoking (if you do)
Smoking hastens skin aging. Nicotine adds years to your appearance. Scientific studies point out that even one puff of smoke can produce trillions of free radicals in the lungs. And radicals are known to irritate body cells, increasing your risk of cancer. Besides, this can also pollute the atmosphere and make your breath foul.
8. Work with the type of work that you like.
Find a work that satisfies you. Overwork is also unproductive so you also need time to relax, don’t take your life too seriously. Whatever you do, anyway, you have only at most an optimal of 8 hours a day. If you’re after money, who will spend lots of them when you leave this world. Gain insight from the words of Solomon in Ecclesiastes 2:21, “For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a man who has not labored for it…”. We only need enough to live. Money is not everything.

THE BEAUTY OF LOOKING AGELESS
It's an age-old question, quite literally. Should women of a certain age grow old gracefully or seek modern-day cosmetic tricks to help them hold back the tide of time? Naturally, we all have to come to terms with ageing at some point in our lives. But while some women will love turning 40, others loathe getting older. Some see age as an asset, but to others it's a liability. So is there equilibrium? Maybe, says Regina Jere-Malanda as she explores some dos and don'ts of ageless beauty.
Before critics get their knives out, New African Woman would like to categorically emphasise that there is nothing wrong with looking your age! But again, nothing should stop anyone from searching for the elixir of ageless beauty if that is what they want. The problem arises when women feel pressurised into looking younger, as Charla Krupp (the American writer and former beauty editor at Glamour magazine) appears to do in her book How Not To Look Old, in which she recommends that to counter discrimination in the workplace and in society in general, older women should not bother with political solutions but try and look younger. "Aging sucks" is her mantra.
But whether a woman wants to look or feel younger than they really are should really be a matter of personal choice. However, recommending sensible and healthy measures on how to achieve that timeless-beauty look does no harm unless imposed on an unwilling target. For us black women, we are always surrounded by graceful, ageless beauties from as far back as the days of Cleopatra in Egypt to today's array of famous gorgeous black women worldwide.
Black Don't Crack
With an age range of between 35 and 75, Tina Turner, Iman, Winnie Mandela, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Sade, Diana Ross, Beverly Johnson, Vanessa Williams, Tyra Banks, Halle Berry and many more are not only considered some of the most beautiful black women, they also exemplify ageless beauty. In Afro-speak they are the embodiment of "Black don't crack", a term commonly used to describe why most black people naturally look younger than their true age. As the first black woman to grace the cover of Vogue back in 1974, beauty mogul Beverly Johnson, who now runs her own self-named empire of Afro hair and beauty products, says of her ageless beauty: "I've always looked at my career as a business. I feel that we are a generation that embraces age, as opposed to just giving up."
Italian actress Sophia Loren, who is revered as the embodiment of timeless natural beauty, once attributed the secret of her inimitable beauty to "a love of life, spaghetti and the odd bath in virgin olive oil".
The practice of bathing in olive oil dates back to her Roman ancestors. Sophia Loren has never had plastic surgery. Early in her career, she was urged to have her nose done, but she declined, and she has continued to reject the notion that women must mould themselves to fit some unnatural ideal of beauty. Hear! hear!
But we black women are in luck when it comes to youthful looks, fewer skin flaws and imperfections. This is mainly thanks to Mother Nature. Our pigmentation and the amount of melanin in the skin go a long way in keeping us looking youthful with age. This is why it is very important not to tamper with our natural pigmentation through dreadful skin-lightening products.
But in this contemporary age of advanced cosmetic fads and technology, in which the majority of us black women are willing participants, what is the best way to everlasting and youthful beauty? In a random order, New African Woman has rounded up some of the much-talked-about dos and don'ts of ageless beauty.
The Dos and Don'ts of Ageless Beauty
Stay current and comfortable: Make-up shouldn't be used to mask your flaws, but to enhance your best features. Try finding a fresh, modern beauty look that you feel comfortable with, as long as it doesn't date you.
Have an open mind: Ageing is often associated with hanging onto old and deep-set views. Open up to new ideas, new lifestyles and appropriate fashion trends. You do not have to like everything new, but keep your mind open to other fashion ideas than the ones you have held on to for years.
Keep up to date: If your hair, clothes and make-up haven't changed in a decade, they become an easy giveaway to your real age. Keep up to date with a youthful but appropriate look.
Good posture: This is not only a health ideal, but the right posture also makes you look taller, slimmer and reflects how confident you are in yourself. Experts say a person with low self-esteem will usually exhibit poor posture--a slouching or curving back, for example.
Have a great hairdo or haircut: Have your hair done properly. Bad or mediocre hairstyles are a no-no when you are at a certain age. Avoid DIY styles. If you can afford to, get a good, top-of-the-range hairdresser. And if your hairdresser looks out of fashion or only does hair of people of certain age, find a new one.
Choose a hairstyle that suits your face and your age. A general rule for women 'of a certain age' is to keep hair shoulder length or shorter. Braids are always a great do. There is no harm keeping your hair modern and following current trends--appropriately though.
Make an effort: Try your best to look good, to take care of your skin and pamper your body. The end result will have an effect not only on your looks, but also on your spirits, mood and self-esteem. Have a positive attitude: Always think and tell yourself that you are beautiful and act as such. It will show!
Avoid looking too trendy: Don't try to dress totally inappropriately for your age. Observe what younger people are wearing and adapt it to your age and personal style. You can wear almost anything as long as it's appropriate, fits you well and suits your body.
Pick up a fashion magazine: Read one occasionally to get the basic idea of what's new and youthful, yet age appropriate. Be open minded to new styles and ideas, but don't feel you have to fit in. Note what celebrities your age are wearing: What do they wear in their real lives? There are many celebrities in their forties and over and they all look fabulous, on and off the red carpet.
Hot wardrobe: Always have one hot, popular item in your wardrobe at all times. Whether this is an item of clothing or an accessory, you will appear as if you're keeping up with the times without spending a fortune.
Buy and wear a bra that fits properly: Where possible, get measured to know your perfect fit and size. Sags and bulges just ruin any beautiful look.
Don't be predictable: At a certain age we tend to stick to what we know best--same shop, same style, same hair, same make-up. Try a new shopping experience and broaden your style horizons.
Wear retro differently every time: If you have a fashion item modelled on something from your heyday, do not wear it exactly the same way as it was then--that just pushes you into a time warp.
Make-up and beauty
Shape those brows: Well-groomed eyebrows open up your face and give eyes more definition. But after the age of 35, always shape them in a fuller line, as very fine brows give an ageing look. Where possible, ask a professional to shape them for you-the wrong shape can be a disaster and make you look not just stupid, but sad too.
Luscious lips? After 35, avoid dark matted or glossy lipstick. Try creamy light shades or golden hints.
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate: This helps increase and renew fresh and younger looking skin, as well as removing dry, dull looking skin, and maintains a healthy cell turnover.
Why not try exfoliating the skin using microdermabrasion? This will help remove dead skin cells to expose the healthy and beautiful skin that lies beneath.
try a moisturiser rich in antioxidants to prevent skin damage. Regular professional facials are recommended if you can afford to.
Love your hands: Never neglect your hardworking hands as they can be the easiest giveaway to one's true age. Moisturise your hands every so often throughout the day.
Have a facelift: Yes, we said it! But holistically, that is. This includes gentle massage of the face, neck and shoulders to produce a better skin tone, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and make your face look fresh.
Don't overlook your neck: The skin on your neck may be more sensitive than on your face, but don't ignore it.
Massage in a good moisturiser. A top tip is to invest in a good moisturiser.
Maintain a good diet: Drink plenty of water and consume antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.
Maintain a healthy weight: As we age, we tend to lose our lean muscle mass very quickly and it is replaced by fat. This slows our metabolism. So if your weight is currently over the healthy range for your height, losing weight will be beneficial to your health, your looks and how you feel.
Exercise: It is commonly accepted that as we grow older we tend to become less active physically. However, just 30 minutes of any activity a day will go a long way.
A short run, a brisk walk, simple weightlifts, etc. where possible, invest in a gym membership.
Get your beauty sleep: As important as food, water and exercise is your sleep. Have at least eight hours of sleep every day to rest and detoxify your brain. The effects of a good well-rested night trickle down to your looks the next day.
All in all, however, just as Oprah Winfrey (who has a team of hairstylists and make-up artists who keep her looking youthfully good for her age) deeply believes, ageless beauty is something we can't always buy, nip or tuck.
She states: "I have found, for myself, that the best secret to ageing is about your attitude ... I think it's how you feel about yourself at any given moment ... if you're in love with yourself, if you feel that you have something to offer to yourself, your family and the world."

BALANCED EATING HABIT
The Secret to Feeling Fantastic, Looking Younger
And Adding Years to Your Life
Healthy eating is essential to your health and well being. In your great grandparents’ days, healthy eating was easy. Food was grown on nutrient rich soil without herbicides and pesticides. It was whole, natural and unprocessed. Meals, breads and desserts were cooked or baked in the home from scratch, not produced in a laboratory from chemicals not intended for human consumption.
Times have changed!
It’s true. With our fast-paced lifestyles, we don’t have time to devote hours or entire days to preparing healthy meals to nourish our families and ourselves. But are we really doing ourselves a favor by eating highly processed food, laden with sugar, in many forms, and filled with chemicals we can’t pronounce, much less know want they are and what they are doing to our insides?
I grew up on a better-than-average Standard American Diet (SAD). My dad had a large vegetable garden. We had many different fruits growing on trees, bushes and vines in our yard. My mother cooked from scratch. We didn’t have chips, candy and sodas, except on holidays and special occasions. But we did eat white bread, canned vegetables, pasteurized and homogenized dairy products, including processed cheese and ice cream, boxed cereals with sugar added, and desserts and pastries made from white sugar and white flour when my mother baked.
I had a history of frequent fevers and sore throats as a child. I was diagnosed with chronic gastritis in high school. I suffered with ugly acne as a teen and young adult. I went through a period in my 20’s of constant low-grade fevers. Through much of my childhood and young adulthood, I experienced chronic headaches.
While a student at a major mid-western university, I visited the dermatology clinic associated with the university’s medical school for my chronic acne. I was given a prescription for tetracycline to be taken four times a day, which I did religiously, nonstop, for five years! I was advised that as long as I took my tetracycline four times a day, I could eat anything I wanted. Diet was not important! This was my ticket from a better-than-average SAD diet to a full-fledged, bottom-of-the-barrel, SAD diet.

The Consequences of NOT Eating Healthy Food
Many people question the importance of healthy eating because they seemed to be fine not eating healthfully for many years. Then all, of a sudden, they don’t feel well, they’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, heart disease or cancer or have some other health challenges. They don’t understand it. What happened?
Well, simply put, it’s like this. We’re born with a reserve to protect us against some of the assaults against our body. Think of it as a stack of $100 bills. Over time as we abuse our body, for example, by eating processed foods, junk food, unhealthy food, we spend some of those $100 bills. Eventually, if we continue eating unhealthfully, the whole stack will be gone. That’s when we’ll have big problems. We’re no longer able to get away with the indiscretions that we could when we were younger.
If you’ve already experienced this, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, your stack of $100 bills hasn’t run out yet. But you don’t know when it will. It could be tomorrow. It could be two weeks, or five or 10 years from now. But why take the chance?
Food is your body’s fuel. It gives your body what it needs to function properly.
Some of the things that you could experience if you’re not eating healthfully might include:
* headaches
* indigestion
* depression
* candida
* difficulty sleeping
* poor memory
* senile dementia
* anorexia/bulimia
* dry skin
* adult acne
* constipation
* poor digestion
* halitosis/bad breath
* mouth/tongue ulcers
* menstrual problems
* diarrhea
* irritability
* fatigue
* polyps
* diverticulitis
* gallstones
* osteoporosis
* COPD – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
* anemia
* asthma
* mental illness
* irritable bowel syndrome
* fibromyalgia

Makeup Tips for Older Women
How to Conceal Wrinkles
Less is more when it comes to downplaying wrinkles on your face. Find out the right and wrong way to apply powders and foundation.
1. way to apply powders and foundation.
Highlight your eyes. Great eye makeup will make eyes "pop" and attract eyes away from the wrinkles on your face. Keep brows groomed and filled in. See How to Make Up Eyes in 8 Steps.
Go light on foundation. Many women with wrinkles make the mistake of trying to cover them. But a face full of heavy foundation only highlights wrinkles. Instead, try a tinted moisturizer and use only on the parts of your face that need covering up. Also, no matter how pale you are, go a shade or two darker with your foundation or tinted moisturizer. Lighter shades only highlight wrinkles. I recommend a great tinted moisturizer in my Top 10 Foundation Picks.
Watch that powder habit. When you were younger, you likely had oilier skin and got used to powdering your entire face. But dewy skin is actually youthful and you should put away your powder (except for the nose and chin). Makeup artists tell me they NEVER use powder on women over 50 unless they're going to be taped, because powder sits atop wrinkles highlighting them.

How to Conceal Sagging Skin
You've heard the old quote attributed to Catherine Deneuve, "When you get older, you have to be ready to trade your ass for your face." If you have sagging skin, don't run off to a plastic surgeon. Here are my favorite tricks and tips that, unlike a facelift, cost little to nothing.
Downplay jowls with gorgeous earrings, but stay away from chokers, which bring eyes straight to your jawline. Love necklaces? They should hit at the collarbone or lower. Don't wear elaborate earrings and a necklace, pick one or the other. Both can be overkill.
Got a crepe-y neck? Haircuts that hit just below the chin will draw attention away from your neck. Long cuts attract the eye downward, according to stylist John Barrett in the November 2007 issue of O magazine. I also love the look of scarves, wrapped several times around the neck. Very European. Get inspired by 10 Celebrities Over 50 With Gorgeous Hair.
Don't apply blush to the apples of your cheeks or you risk looking like a clown. Instead, choose a rosy blush and using a large fluffy brush, sweep color over the highest point of your cheekbones. Start about an inch in from the nose.
Dewy skin is always youthful. Because aging skin tends to be dry, skip the powders and opt instead for liquid foundation and creamy blush. See 20 Foundation, Concealer & Blush Tips That Will Change Your Life.
Crow's Feet Around the Eyes and Lips
People start developing crow's feet around the eyes in their 30s. I consider my own "laughing lines" and believe it's sign of a good life.
Don't try to cover up wrinkles around the eyes with heavy coats of concealer. You'll end up with raccoon eyes. Instead, apply just a few dabs of concealer and always pat in concealer with your ring finger. You can also use a brush which distributes concealer more evenly.
See my list of Top 10 Concealers.
Always skip powder around the eye area, it settles into wrinkles.
Laugh lines around lips? Plump up lips and bring attention to THEM, not the surrounding area, by using a moisturizing lip gloss. Any time you add moisturizer to skin or lips, it plumps them up, making them appear more youthful.
Saggy Lids
Crepe-y lids are another natural part of the aging process. You can spend thousands on an eyelift or you can try these beauty tips that cost nothing.
Never apply mascara to bottom lashes. Instead, curl lashes and then apply a couple coats of the darkest mascara you can find. Curling lashes always makes eyes pop.
You may enjoy 15 Mascara Tips and Tricks.
Makeup artists also suggest keeping eyeliner to the upper lid only. A liquid liner stays better than pencils. You can practice curving the line up on the outer corners of eyes to "lift" them. Avoid thick, heavy lines, however. I am a believer in rule-breaking however, so I think you can go ahead and line the bottom lashes, just skip the liquid liner and try a pencil instead. Don't make the line thick and be sure to smudge. Also, your eyes will look beady if you try to line the inside of your eyes (my mom used to do this and it drove me crazy). SeeHow to Apply Eyeliner.
Reconsider shimmers. Shimmery eyeshadows only highlight crow's feet. The one area they work in is the inside corner of the eye. Apply a dot of shimmery light eyeshadow in the instead corner of the eye to make eyes pop.
See 10 Eyeshadow Tricks I Wish I Knew Years Ago.
When you have a saggy upper lid, no need to go all out with several different colors of eyeshadow. Instead, keep eyeshadow in place all day with an eyeshadow primer, then apply a couple sweeps of a light eyeshadow that's flattering to your skin color. Skip the bright, crazy colors. I recommend primers in How to Keep Your Eyeshadow in Place for Hours.
False eyelashes have made a comeback. But skip the full lashes from the 70s and instead opt for individual lashes. Seehow to apply false lashes.
Thinning or Bushy Eyebrows
I'm a stickler for good brows and am known for making my friends let me tweeze theirs.
Keeping your brows done nicely is like having a facelift without surgery, according to author Charla Krupp's brow guy. Here are some tips for keeping your brows perfectly done:
Get your brows professionally done. Nothing opens eyes up like curling lashes and keeping your brows neat. If you can't afford waxing or threading every few weeks, use the professional's job as a map for your own tweezing. Simply pluck the stray hairs that grow in between professional tweezing or waxing. How to pluck your own brows.
Drawn-in brows are a no-no. You know the pencil-thin line you see some of your friends or women in your town wear? Well, they only age you and they're somewhat tacky. Learn how to properly fill in sparse brows.
Avoid tweezing gray brow hairs. Instead, conceal them with a brow powder or pencil.
Thinning Lips
Personally, I love a thin lip. I read somewhere once that it's a sign of intelligence. I don't know about that, but I do know that as we age, our lips lose some of their fat. Here's how to plump up thin lips.
Picking the right lip color is a must. Makeup artist Bobbi Brown suggests skipping the bright colors and instead opt for a color that's just a shade or 2 darker than your natural lip color. Check out 16 Lipstick Tricks and Tips.
As you age, your natural lip line fades. Create a lip line by coloring in lips first with a lip liner, then apply gloss or lipstick over the liner.
Consider getting rid of lipstick and using lip gloss instead. Gloss creates the allusion of puffed-up lips, especially when applied to the middle of lips.
Lip plumpers do work, but the effects don't last long (we're talking under an hour). So skip the plumpers and save your money. Even Vaseline in lips will make them appear larger.
Ack! What to Do About Sprouting Chin Hairs
For the record, I know 30-year-olds with chin hair problems. You can tweeze them or have your stylist tweeze them, but they will always grow back. The only way to keep chin hairs at bay permanently is electrolysis.
How to Get Rid of Your Moustache
You have 2 options for moustaches: Wax them off with a home waxing kit you can buy in any drugstore or have a professional do it. See How to Get Rid of Hair on Your Face.
To lighten dark moustaches, try kit made just for this which you can find in your beauty aisle at the drugstore

WHAT IT TAKES TO LOOK YOUNGER
Many of us still are searching for the Fountain of Youth. We go to all extremes to look younger. We spend endless dollars on surgical face lifts to bioxin treatments. There are other methods, not as drastic, to assist in giving us a more youthful look, make us feel better about ourselves, and not as costly.
Also, looking younger is not always about great skin or a terrific body. Sometimes there are little things we can do to help us appear years younger than what we really are. Read below for some tips.
1. Healthy smooth skin and a smileEat a healthy, nutritious diet and drink water every day. You hear it all the time, you are what you eat. Proper nutrition is key to looking your best and living a longer, healthy life.
2. Try to treat yourself to a weekly sauna. This helps the blood in your skin circulate better and brings all of the healthy nutrients to your face. You look better and younger! Saunas leave your skin super soft and you'll get an instant healthy glow!
3. Wash your face at least twice a day, gently with a soft wash cloth. Use an exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin, moisturize to replace the moisture removed from the treatment.
4. Use a good quality sun screen to protect your skin to ward off skin cancer.
5. Exercise to improve your shape and muscle tone. Include both aerobic (cardiovascular) as well as anaerobic (strength-building) exercise to be fit, trim and feel great longer.
6. Learn to have a positive, rather than negative attitude. The way you think, reflects on the way you look. Frowning causes wrinkles faster than smiling and makes you look less attractive.
7. Learn something new. You look the best when you feel fulfilled.
8. Don't ever start smoking or quit. Oxygen is our best friend. The subject of smoking is a thorny one when it comes to giving it up. It has been scientific studies that have pointed to the fact that smoking releases trillions of free radicals and these are not good for your body or your skin. Free radicals kill off cells at any stage of their development. It also constricts the capilliaries in the face leaving you looking very pale.
It is a personal choice, but clearly it has a detrimental effect on the body and its processes
1The number one thing that ages people is their hairstyle. If you want to look younger, keep up with the trends. Do not get stuck in a style you have been wearing for years. Buy a hairstyle book and take it to your stylist.
If your stylist is old fashioned get a new one. Look at the current actors or actresses. They are most often up to date, and you can follow their style, but modify it to make it your own.
Color your hair. Get a beautiful color that works with your skin tone, and add some highlights or lowlights if blonde to give it depth. For very dark hair, lighten up. Hair that is too dark can be harsh.
For hair that is too light, add some lowlights. Ashy and too light colors can wash you out. Gold tones are great for adding color. Do not be afraid of red. Red and gold are the colors of youth and vitality.
Keep the hair and makeup effects natural. That means to color the hair and use makeup, but go for a natural effect.
2. Makeup should be light and airy. Go for a light moisturizing, hydrating skin brightener for a base. Follow with a light powder and then brush on a small amount of pinkish blush on the cheeks.
3. Eye tones should be neutral and soft.
4. Buy a lipstick that makes teeth appear whiter (but avoid brown tints). Whiter teeth make you look younger.
Keep your lips moist and glossed. Wrinkled lips are a dead giveaway.
5. Speaking of whiter teeth, get a tooth whitener, or go to the dentist and have it done. This takes years off instantly.
6. If you can get a moisturizing facial once a week, do so. If not, try to go once a month. The manipulations are great for the skin tone. If you cannot afford this, then do an at home facial using a honey mask. (Read my honey mask article).
7. Keep your nails done, but keep them light. It is youthful to have a natural effect.
8. Keep your hands moisturized at all times. Dry hands are a dead age giveaway.
9. Fashion is the number two biggest mistake people make. If you want to appear younger, you have to dress young, but not too young. There is such a thing as going too far.
Look at the mannequins in the store. Do not go to the old lady or man department. Stay in the juniors. Do not get carried away though. Keep it young, but not too young. If it looks good on a ten year old, it is not for you.
Look in current magazines and see what people are wearing. Tear out fashions you think are youthful and that you can wear. Even if you do not think you can wear it, try it on. Youth is all about trying new things, taking chances and being spontaneous.
10. Keep up with everything new. It's hard not to appear old when you seem to be stuck into the last century and know very little of the modern world.
Listen to new music. Do not get stuck in the old stuff. Try to listen to at least a couple of new songs every week. This will help you stay current. A young attitude is very important to looking young.
Try new things. Get involved in a sport, or take a class. This will help particularly if you are involved with younger people.
Learn some young terms. Listen to how younger people speak. Pick up some new language. If you can speak and understand younger people, you will appear younger.
11. Smile a lot. Young people have bright eyes and bright smiles. When you smile it can take years off instantly.
12. While many people would consider dressing in a younger fashion, to be a definite NO, it has been shown that if you look at the age group of 5-10 years younger than your current age, it frequently allows you to adopt the clothing styles and appear to be a younger individual by virtue of association. Look at some ot fhe older female filmstars (Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton etc) to get a good perspective on what can be done.
13. Showing tension on your face hardens your appearance and makes you look angry sometimes, so relax a little, show a slight smile and this will visually soften the lines of your face, making you look younger. Look in the mirror or other reflective surface to achieve the desired result. This may take a little practice to reduce the long standing habit.
14. When out and about or at home use or migrate to softer lighting areas as these have a positive effect on your visual appearance. Harsh lighting such as fluorescent lighting causes sharp contrasts and stark appearance. At home use dimmed lighting or soft toned bulbs, shades and lamps.
15.Play everyday, let loose your inner child. If you have children or grandchildren play with them watch their funny antics. Pets can also be a source of funny moments, but positive interactions with them also have a beneficial effect on you. Harmonise with your natural surroundings. Take a walk by a shallow river or stream and listen to the gurgling and bubbling water as it playfully makes its way downstream.
16. Wearing formal clothes makes you look older, so look for the trends in the lower age group (some 5-10 years younger than you current age) and select something to wear from their ranges.
17. When faced with a challenge, give it a go, you will be surprised at the buzz it gives you when you attempt new things. This gives you a good feeling inside which means you feel better about yourself.
18. Sing to yourself, whistle or doing something that makes you feel good. All these things make you positively brimming about life which in turn makes you feel good inside with the resulting good effects on you.
19. Look after yourself by having a bubble bath, soak up the moisture and when finished help retain the moisture by rubbing baby oil into your skin, particularly around the eyes, forehead, mouth and neck. This will help reduce the effects of aging on the skin.
20. For men, being clean shaven is good but avoid long hair as well. Keep the sideburns to a short length.
21. Where possible use natural products as these are unlikely to contain strong chemicals or even better try organic skin care products.
22. Moisturise directly after having showered, perhaps with an Aloe or oatmeal based preparation to help prevent your skin from drying out.
23. Brown lipstick shades are not the colours of choice particularly as you get older. Opt for creamier colours or even glossy lipsticks (to make your lips appear plumper)
24. Try curling your eyelashes after your mascara as dried. Another desirable effect can be lining your eyes (smudging can be effective).
25. Trouble with dry skin on your hands and feet, a combination of advocado oils on hands and feet before retiring for the night will help.
26. Get plenty of sleep, rest often when you feel tired. Sleep and rest is the body's way of recharging the system. It has beneficial effects by reducing reaction times to everyday events and increases your resistance to disease. Memory and IQ are generally better after a good nights sleep.
27. Use a contoured pillow with a silk pillow cases (reduces lines on the face)
28. Sleep is an excellent stress buster, which can be another factor in the aging process. Avoid stress wherever possible. Taking a relaxing bath is another way of reducing the effects of stress. Or try aromatherapy.
Stress increases the ageing process and plays havoc with metabolism, so anything that decreases stress is good such as laughter, playing etc.

THE BEST CREAM FOR FIRMING UP SAGGING SKIN AND WRINKLES
Despite so much hype and disappointment today, the best cream for firming sagging skin and wrinkles actually over-delivers on its promises of more youthful skin. As usual, it is all down to using the right ingredients. So what is the best cream for firming sagging skin and wrinkles and which ones should you avoid?
Maybe we should start with those creams to avoid as they are in fact most of the ones available! You know the ones I mean, the famous brands advertized by celebrities that cost a fortune and result in little or no benefits. Look on the label for ingredients like methylparaben, fragrances, mineral oil and triclosan. All of these can lead to irritations, rashes and even cancer with regular use. Unlike in Europe, there is very little regulation in the US despite many attempts to improve it.
However, the very best cream for firming sagging skin and wrinkles is free from any harmful chemicals and works so well and so fast because it fights the main causes of aging which are loss of collagen and oxidation by free radicals. Basically as you grow older, your body produces less of the skin's main protein called collagen, as you may know. What you may not be aware of is the fact that this protein in a cream will not work as it is not absorbed into the skin.
The only way to restore your youthful looks and softer and smoother skin is to use an ingredient like Cynergy TK to stimulate your body to make more collagen. This natural extract from the wool of sheep showed a sustained 14% improvement in skin moisture retention over 18 days and a sustained improvement in skin elasticity of 42% over 18 days in clinical trials.
Restoring your collagen levels to those of your younger days helps to firm up sagging skin and fade any wrinkles and lines naturally. Your skin will feel more supple as your levels rise and the addition of powerful antioxidants in the cream are also vital. Antioxidants are necessary to fight the free radicals which damage healthy cells and are responsible for premature aging and many diseases. Cynergy TK has the most powerful antioxidants of any other single ingredient to quash the free radicals and keep your skin healthy.
Now you know what the best cream for firming up sagging skin and wrinkles is, you can soon look forward to looking as young on the outside as you still feel on the inside with healthier skin. Visit the website below to learn more about the skin care products I personally use that contain Cynergy TK.

STEPS TO AVOID AGING
"Cheerfulness and contentment are great beautifiers and are famous preservers of youthful looks." -- Charles Dickens
Here are a few beauty tricks that will make you look younger with just a sweep of a blush brush or mascara wand.
1. Keep your hair between your chin and your shoulders. Side-swept bangs and hair no longer than your shoulders will take off years. Find out why in this article on the most flattering haircuts on women.
2. Wrong lipstick shades can age you Another trick to looking younger is to steer clear of brown lipstick shades. Avoid matte lipstick as they tend to settle into your lip lines. Instead, try creamier lipsticks or glosses. (Glosses are especially youthful and make your lips appear bee-stung). Here are 15 more lipstick tricks and tips.
3. Stick to creamy blushes and shadows Older skin usually means dry skin, so creamy blushes and shadows are your best bet. Also, powder blushes and shadows tend to settle into your fine lines and wrinkles, while creamier products "plump" up your skin.
4. Define those eyes Curled lashes immediately make eyes "pop." One tip I love I learned from the editors of Allure: You can curl your lashes AFTER mascara application, just make sure the mascara has dried. I find lining my eyes helps make my somewhat tiny eyes look 10 times larger. I rarely leave the house now without mascara.
5. Don't overpluck Once you hit your 30s, you'll want to be careful not to overpluck your eyebrows since brows are less apt to grow back if you excessively pluck. Find out what you can do to fix overplucked brows.
6. Try teeth whitening Over time, teeth may yellow from coffee, tea or red wine stains. You can whiten teeth quickly with over-the-counter products such as Crest Whitestrips.
7. Stand up straight. Think about all the sexy women you know. They stand up straight and confidently. Not only will this make you look ten pounds thinner in seconds, it will make you look five years younger as well.
8. Get a good night's sleep Few things age you overnight more than a poor night's sleep. Your eyes are puffy, your skin sallow and dull and your face sags.

Hollywood Secrets to Looking Younger
"It is said that no star is a heroine to her makeup artist." -- Richard Corliss, American writer
If you are like me, you're constantly surprised when you find out how old some of Hollywood's hottest and still-working celebrities are.
Who knew Susan Sarandon was past 60, or Christie Brinkley (a face of Cover Girl) was born in 1954. Of course, looking young in Hollywood means avoiding an early, forced retirement, but just what ARE these celebrity secrets? And better yet, how can you and I benefit from what they use and what they know?
Keeping skin in gorgeous condition is an incredibly time-consuming and expensive job requirement for the typical celebrity. But here are a few secrets I've uncovered for you, plus tips on how you too can get younger-looking skin.
Secret #1: Injectable fillers
To treat those deep smile lines, forehead wrinkles and crow's feet, celebrities turn to hyaluronic-acid fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Juvederm Ultra Plus (for deeper lines).
Procedures must be done by a professional and the cost is $600-$1,000 a needle. Results can last up to six months.
Secret #2: Botox is still hot
Botox is certainly not a secret, but according to dermatologist Tina Alster of Washington, D.C., in the April 2007 issue of Harper's Bazaar, "Botox remains the gold standard for treating crow's lines and wrinkles."
Botox works by paralyzing the muscles beneath wrinkles. If used too much, Botox use can be obvious, as witnessed by several actresses including Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman and Marcia Cross who've fallen victim to "unmoveable forehead" jokes. Botox costs about $300-$500 per treated area. Results last three to six months.
Secret #3: They go under the laser
As we age, our collage production slows down significantly making our faces appear thinner, and more gaunt (on the plus side, collagen depletion shows off great bone structure). Boosting collagen production is big business in Hollywood and more and more celebs are turning to laser skin resurfacing to boost theirs.
How it works: Lasers such as Fraxel -- currently the most popular laser on the market -- are able to penetrate deep within the skin to treat damaged skin. According to Fraxel's official Website, the laser creates microscopic tears deep within the skin which trigger the body to naturally produce more collagen in the repairing process.
Cost is about $1,000 a session. Like most laser therapies (including hair removal, which I underwent), you'll need three to five sessions spaced about a month apart.
Secret #4: They get chemical peels
Yes, yes, yes, of course celebrities (the male ones as well) are constantly getting eye lifts and face lifts and the bags removed from under their eyes, but what so many of them are doing that you and I aren't is exfoliating, chemically. And therein lies our secret number four.
Ever notice how your foundation looks when it's applied to scaly, dry skin? You look older and ashier. The celebrities sheer a few years off their faces in under an hour with a professional chemical peel. Chemical peels work by removing the damaged top layers of skin.
A mild, glycolic acid chemical peel will set you back $150-$300, but you can get similar results in just one month with MD Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel. It's about $68 for 30 daily applications.
Secret #5: Professional makeup artists do their makeup for big events
OK so you and I can't have Mally Roncal on hand every morning before we go to work, but even celebrities don't go out in full makeup every day. But for big events? Oh yes they do.
You and I can look red carpet perfect before events by hitting the makeup counters at department stores or beauty salons.
Usually it's proper etiquette to buy a few products when you get your makeup done at a beauty counter, but for a fee you can have your makeup done professionally (I advise calling ahead to schedule an appointment). If there's no charge, at least tip well. I had my makeup done professionally at the John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman and as I walked home a group of men outside a gay bar practically ransacked me with compliments. It made my night.
Secret #6: They are filmed in tons of makeup
I have seen the paparrazi shots of Heidi Klum without makeup and can I just say Girl Ain't All That. She's pretty of course, but she had major undereye circles and pasty skin. Then there's my all-time favorite story about Tyra Banks told to me by a security guard at NY's Bliss Spa. Even Tyra admits she's not all that. So what can you learn from this? A little bit of the right makeup can go a long way.
Secret #7: They stay out of the sun
Nicole Kidman is famously afraid of the sun. She stays out of it at all costs. In fact, many celebrities simply avoid that sun by wearing hats and slathering on sunscreen. They know the sun is the No. 1 cause of prematurely aging skin.
You and I can avoid the sun by not only wearing hats, but getting in the habit of wearing sunscreen every day, no matter the weather. (I'm also a big fan of teaching sons and daughters about sunscreen very early in life). Find out what the best sunscreen in the world is here .
Secret #8: They are all about retinols
To keep fine lines from becoming wrinkles, actresses in their 20s turn to retinoid creams. I have read of dermatologists who swear of all the antioxidants, peels, scrubs and injections, retinoids are the best way to wipe years off your face.
Prescription retinoids like Renova, Tazorac and Retin-A are popular, but if you prefer over-the-counter, consider Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Intensive Face Lotion SPF 20.

DO YOU WANT TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUNGER THAN YOUR AGE?
The secret of looking younger than your Age.
Some of the most visible signs of aging appear on your face in the form of wrinkles, age spot and laugh lines. But this is not all. There can be some other signs as well such as weight gain and loss of lean muscle.
Though there are many anti aging creams and topical ointments that claim to reduce wrinkles and other visible signs of aging, nothing seems to work better than HGH supplements.
HGH or human growth hormone is the hormone that is naturally produced by your body and it is the hormone behind all growth processes in your body.
The production of HGH in your body begins slowing down with the onset of adolescence and this triggers the aging process. Reduced HGH levels tends to leave cell damage in your body that occurs on a normal day to day basis unattended and this is what makes you old and aged.
HGH production in your body can be enhanced with the help of a regular exercise routine and proper diet.
It is known that regular exercise can help stimulate HGH production in your body. Not only this, certain foods that are rich in antioxidants and contain amino acids like l-arginine are also known to reduce age effects.
Antioxidants flush out toxins from your system and makes your metabolism faster. This can help your body burn fat at a faster rate and reduce your weight. Not only this, it is also likely to increase your energy levels.
L-arginine help stimulate the production of HGH in your body. Foods that are rich in l-arginine include lean meat, dairy and poultry products, oatmeal, granola, nuts etc.,
Besides this, if you really want to look younger make sure you get enough sleep. Sleep is the most natural way to rejuvenate and recharge your body. People who are sleep deprived often like worn out and older than their years.
One of the main reasons behind this is that HGH is secreted in your body during the first few phases of deeo sleep and lack of sleep disturbs your hormonal cycle that results in lower HGH production.
HGH Supplements
In addition to above, natural HGH supplements are one of the best remedies not just to make you look younger but also to make your function younger.
Such supplements are packed with amino acids and other ingredients such as l-arginine, l-glutamine, l-valine, green tea extract, gaba, astragalus etc.,

Healthy Living - Your Life in Balance
The Exercise Habit
How much exercise do I need?
Talk to your doctor about how much exercise is right for you. A good goal for many people is to work up to exercising 4 to 6 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Remember, though, that exercise has so many health benefits that any amount is better than none.
How do I get started?
Sneak exercise into your day
•Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
•Go for a walk during your coffee break or lunch.
•Walk all or part of the way to work.
•Do housework at a fast pace.
•Rake leaves or do other yard work.
Start by talking with your family doctor. This is especially important if you haven't been active, if you have any health problems or if you're pregnant or elderly.
Start out slowly. If you've been inactive for years, you can't run a marathon after only 2 weeks of training! Begin with a 10-minute period of light exercise or a brisk walk every day and gradually increase how hard you exercise and for how long.
How do I stick with it?
Here are some tips that will help you start and stick with an exercise program:
•Choose something you like to do. Make sure it suits you physically, too. For instance, swimming is easier on arthritic joints.
•Get a partner. Exercising with a friend or relative can make it more fun.
•Vary your routine. You may be less likely to get bored or injured if you change your exercise routine. Walk one day. Bicycle the next. Consider activities like dancing and racquet sports, and even chores like vacuuming or mowing the lawn.
•Choose a comfortable time of day. Don't work out too soon after eating or when it's too hot or cold outside. Wait until later in the day if you're too stiff in the morning.
•Don't get discouraged. It can take weeks or months before you notice some of the changes from exercise, such as weight loss.
•Forget "no pain, no gain." While a little soreness is normal after you first start exercising, pain isn't. Take a break if you hurt or if you are injured.
•Make exercise fun. Read, listen to music or watch TV while riding a stationary bicycle, for example. Find fun things to do, like taking a walk through the zoo. Go dancing. Learn how to play a sport you enjoy, such as tennis.
Making exercise a habit
•Stick to a regular time every day.
•Sign a contract committing yourself to exercise.
•Put "exercise appointments" on your calendar.
•Keep a daily log or diary of your exercise activities.
•Check your progress. Can you walk a certain distance faster now than when you began exercising? Or is your heart rate slower now?
•Ask your doctor to write a prescription for your exercise program, such as what type of exercise to do, how often to exercise and for how long.
•Think about joining a health club. The cost gives some people an incentive to exercise regularly.
How can I prevent injuries?
Start every workout with a warm-up. This will make your muscles and joints more flexible. Spend 5 to 10 minutes doing some light calisthenics and stretching exercises, and perhaps brisk walking. Do the same thing when you're done working out until your heart rate returns to normal.
Pay attention to your body. Stop exercising if you feel very out of breath, dizzy, faint, nauseous or have pain.
